AI Creates Pickup Lines That Can Spice Up Your Dating Life

March 29, 2021

Have you tried all the cliché pickup lines from the internet and still can't find the perfect pick-up line to woo your potential mate, don’t worry. Science has got your back. If none of your pickup lines have charmed your way, AI is here to help your dating life.

Romance In The Air Or Through AI?

Most of us would have scrolled online to come up with pickup lines that aren’t cringy but AI has generated them for us. It is surprising to see how AI can work its way to flirting. The AI researcher and author, Janelle Shane have come up with an idea to help spice up your dating life with pickup lines to sweep your date off their feet. Shane wanted to test AI to see if it could work in the area of interpersonal relations. Shane came up with fascinating pickup lines to amaze your crush.

AI entering the space of romance has opened up a lot of avenues. A month ago, a company called CopyAI launched a bot that offered a pen-written Valentine’s Day message to your partner (screams romance, tbh!) They used the same GPT-3 technology as Shane has done to train the bot to write the letters. The users had to note down what attributes they liked in their partner and got a message sent to them. One of them read, “I love you to the moon and back.”

Babbage, a smaller variant of the language-modeling algorithm, was 'not always 100% sure about what it means to be generating pickup lines,' Shane said. It came up with conversation starters like 'If you see people with short hair, ask them to let you borrow it for five minutes'

Well, AI doesn’t stop here. Back in 2017, researchers came up with an online AI called InspiroBot that generates inspirational quotes which were posted on images of nature or space. The messages said, “Cats are going to fill the world with pain” which took a wild turn to what it was made for. AI systems rely on artificial neural networks to simulate the way the brain works to learn.

Pickup Lines Through AI is Cheesy

Shane is an optics research scientist at Boulder Nonlinear Systems and she uses her blog to post content that is considered as ‘AI Weirdness’ which are experiments in machine-learning. Her experiment for AI to generate pickup lines dates back to 2017 when she trained the neural network.

Shane in her blog post shared her idea of AI creating pickup lines used for any moment. Some are cheesy and some are really bad, watch out! Shane used a neural net, training data, and a language model by OpenAI called GPT-3. She used four different variants to produce the best pickup lines to woo anyone. Her blog was titled ‘These are the top pickup lines of 2021! Amaze your crush and get results!’

She wrote in her blog that she started collecting data but she was apprehensive as some of the lines were awful. She quickly realized that there was nothing to worry about as the neural net was small and clueless so the lines were incoherent and confusing. A San-Francisco-based OpenAI released GPT-3 which is a sophisticated language program and this was Shane’s lottery. The GPT-3 is an algorithm that uses deep learning to produce human-like text that handles something as nuanced as pickup lines.

The world's largest language modeling software, called GPT-3, would handle something as nuanced as flirting.

Are The Pickup Lines Swoon-Worthy Or Cringe-Worthy?

Here is an interesting fact- the four variants she used were called DaVince, Curie, Babbage, and Ada. Each of them had a different size of neural network which made them either more or less competent at creating the pickup lines

The GPT-3 is usually used to generate fake news articles which are difficult to distinguish from the real ones. Shane said it was used to come up in the art of love but has been somewhat less unsuccessful. The pickup lines of DaVinci have been stated to be most powerful and competent as Shane used a variant that was less off-putting.

DaVinci was considered to be the largest AI, one of the pickup lines of it was ‘I will briefly summarize the plot of Back to the Future II for you.’ DaVinci also came up with iconic lines such as ‘You have the most beautiful fangs I have ever seen.’ Oh boy, your crush is going to fall for you.

Well, those weren’t bad as the others are quite enthralling. Babbage wasn’t entirely sure what it means to generate pickup lines, Shane said. Babbage was a smaller variant of the language-modeling algorithm as it came up with subtle lines. It came up with silly lines such as ‘You are looking good today. Want snacks?’ Snacks are a good way to the heart though. Babbage came up with lines such as ‘I Love You, I Love You, I Love You To The confines of death and disease, the legions of earth rejoices. Woe be to the world! Relatable to pandemic so it has got us covered. ’

Ada came up with pickup lines that were more like hilariously bad bargain deals. Shane confessed that Ada was the smallest of the variants so it was the one that completely lost the plot. It was more like a grocery list than pickup lines with words such as ‘Body softening pads’ or ‘Embroidery tags’ in it. Nothing beats a person’s heart than a grocery list.

Shane came up with different versions of an algorithm to come up with some of the best pickup lines but hold on, they are quite eccentric. How about this one- “’I love you. I don’t care if you’re a doggo in a trenchcoat?” Are you swooning? Pickup lines are usually an ice-breaker and these could lead to a funny response from your crush.

One of the others read, ‘Are you a candle? Because you are so hot of the looks with you.’ *Mic Drop* One such line became the title of her book on Artificial Intelligence, ‘You look like a thing and I love you,’ AI generated a book title along with a pickup line- it has it all. You can use these pickup lines to swoon your crush or laugh it off as cringe, can work both ways right?
