Beyond Life: Why Can Some People Hear The Dead?

January 20, 2021

If you're a fan of the supernatural and horror stories, you may have heard of the paranormal 'mediums' that can speak to the dead. These mediums are people, known as clairaudients. They can, allegedly, cross the realms of life and hear people's spirits speak to them. Currently, scientists are trying to understand why this happens to the clairaudience.

As per a new research conducted at Durham University, the susceptibility to high levels of involvement in activities, unique childhood auditory experiences and high sensitivity to auditory hallucinations are all more prevalent in self-described clairaudient (seeing or hearing the spirits of the dead that are said to surround the living) mediums than in the general population. The discovery could help the researchers to understand the unsettling auditory hallucinations that accompany mental disorders. The research has been published in Mental Health, Religion and Culture.

Spiritualistic accounts of people with psychic powers and clairaudience of seeing or hearing in the absence of body are credited to the spirits of the dead. They are of considerable scientific interest, both for anthropologists researching religious and philosophical claims, and for scientists studying hallucinatory pathological encounters. Researchers specifically want to understand why certain people with an auditory experience report spiritual experience, while some find it more disturbing and are diagnosed for mental health disorders.

What Does the Research Say About Spiritualists?

Adam Powell, a psychologist, and his colleague from Durham University surveyed 65 psychologists from the United Kingdom’s National Union of Spiritualists and 143 members of the general population. They recruited the participants by social media to decide what segregated spiritualists from the general public usually who do not experience hearing the dead’s voices.

44.6% of spiritualists reported hearing voices every day, and 79% said that their experiences were part of their everyday lives. But although most reported hearing the sounds within their heads, while 31.7% reported having voices outside too. The spiritualists had their first auditory encounter at an average age of 21.7 years and recorded a high degree of absorption.

This concept defines the complete absorption in mental tasks and activities or disturbed states and how successful the person is in tuning the world around them. They also indicated that they were more susceptible to hallucination-like experiences. The researchers noticed that spiritualists only generally learned about spiritualism when they encountered it and searched about it.

High levels of absorption were also closely associated with belief in the paranormal in the general population but not in the case of hallucinations. There were no discrepancies in the level of belief of paranormal and the awareness of visual hallucinations in both groups.

These findings, the researchers conclude, suggest that hearing the dead’s voice is unlikely to result from peer pressure, a favourable social background, or a hint of belief in the paranormal. Instead, these individuals follow spiritualism because it is in line with their experience and is deeply relevant to them.

Human Brain During a Spiritual Experience

According to a study published in the Cerebral Cortex, the actions in the parietal cortex, the region of the brain based on awareness of oneself and their surroundings and in the treatment of attention, seems to be a common factor among individuals who have experienced several spiritual experiences

Researchers at Yale and the Spirituality Mind Body Institute at Columbia University interviewed 27 young adults to collect knowledge about past traumatic and stimulating encounters and their spiritual experiences. Although different spiritual experiences varied, researchers observed similar behavioural patterns in the parietal cortex as the participants imagined witnessing the occurrences in the recordings.

Spiritualists tend to report unusual auditory experiences which are positive, start early in life and which they are often then able to control.

How Can You Communicate With the Dead?

Ghost Conductors

Traditionally, ghosts have been known to communicate through candle flames, liquids like water in a glass can ripple when the spirit is present and scents. Audio and video recording devices are both powerful conductors that can be used in real-time transmission. Much like the living has preferences, the dead can prefer specific devices to others, so make sure there are various options available.

Ouija Boards

They are not entirely accurate but certainly help you to contact with the dead. People often knowingly or unknowingly move the planchette because of which people don’t find it completely true. But because the Ouija boards are full of letters and numbers, it’s easy for ghosts to type out their messages very literally. If you cannot find an ouija board in a local store, then it’s easy to make your board as well, but don’t forget to say goodbye to the ghost

Don't Use A Sage

Many people believe that using sage brings non-violent spirits around you. Sage is an ancient herb used in rituals of purification and cleansing. Smudging is the first step of many traditions and spells but not when it comes to contacting ghosts. As sage is used for clearing, ghosts interpret sage as a request to leave the room. If you use sage and then attempt to connect with the spirits are likely to get irritated by your mixed signals and, if they do, be either cranky or degrading.
