Ever since Disney filed a patent for Lightsaber, fans have been (im)patiently waiting for it to become a reality and the wait is over. Disney has unveiled the real-life Lightsaber from Star Wars on the occasion of May 4, a.k.a. May the 4th (Be With You), a.k.a. Star Wars Day!
Every Star Wars fanatic has an undying love for the lightsabers used in the franchises, and boy, do we wish to wield it ourselves and feel the force run through us. Until now, it was just a distant dream to be pacified with cheap knockoffs made of plastic or styrofoam. Lightsabers weren’t real, YET.
Disney has decided to change that. They have created a “real life” lightsaber, which will be a part of their Galactic Starcruiser Hotel at Disney World opening in 2022. The weapon is the hilt out of which a realistic glowing blade erupts, just like in the movies. Disney has built it to mimic the look and even the sound of the weapon shown in the film.
A Real Demo
The new Galactic Starcruiser hotel at Disney World will feature and provide its guests with two days and two night “Story Living” adventure. You can be a character, boarding the Halcyon cruiser on a mission. The activities aboard the cruiser would include lightsaber training, navigation systems training, training of the ship’s defences if you need to fight your way out of the federation.
Josh D’Amaro, the Chairman of Disney Parks, first announced the lightsaber prop. After the video presentation to the press, he presented the press audience with a real-time demo of the developed prop. He picked up the hilt from a box and whoosh! “It’s real”, he claimed as the glowing blade shot out of it. While the press was not allowed to take any videos, Twitter lit up at the prospect of a real-life lightsaber from the stories and first-hand accounts of the eyewitnesses.
The Long Wait Post The Patent
The prop was developed by Disney Imagineering Research and Development, as confirmed by Disney officials.
Disney filed for its patent back in 2017. The primary inspiration for the mechanics of the product comes from- tape measure. Yes, the retractable measure. But the product itself is far more complex than its muse. It has multiple coils of materials that extend and retract, in an instant, giving it its complexity. It has colour-changing LED light strips attached that give it the film like glow.
So gather your wits and prepare for a battle to the death. Well, it won’t be able to cut through metal or flesh for that matter( what a bummer, right? No? ok), But it will give you the same goosebumps every character feels while wielding the weapon for the first time, and Whoosh! Out comes the glowing blade of destruction.
