While we were locked down in our homes, most of us used our phones more than ever in 2020, but did you know what Indians Googled the most in 2020? Google's report titled Year in Search: India for determined progress saw a 140% growth in searches for “work from home jobs” and 85% growth in searches for “online course.” Here's how the digital India fared in 2020.

2020 was an unprecedented year where the world as we knew it changed before our very eyes. The internet became the backbone of our daily lives, and digital adoption rates saw a huge leap across the world. Google’s report titled ‘Year in Search: India for determined progress’ talks about the search trends of Indian users in the past year and also the type of content consumed by the users. Here are the key takeaways: 

The Language Preference

90% of internet users prefer to use their local language to search and carry out tasks online
Indians used Google Translate features over 17 B times in 2020 to translate web pages into Indic languages
More than 84% of online video viewers preferred non-English content.

Change In Consumer Behaviour

A 60% year-over-year (YoY) increase in search queries for “second hand laptops”
120% YoY and 50% YoY increase in search for “stock market” and “buy mutual funds” respectively.
300% increase in search for on-demand services, such as “online doctor consultations”

The Learning Curve

85% YoY growth in searches for “online course”
65% YoY growth in searches for “how to sell online”
14x YoY increase in YouTube searches for online class
50% YoY growth in Google searches for “certificate course”
