Mount Everest Can Fit Inside The Mariana Trench

June 3, 2021

Mount Everest is 5.5 miles but it still doesn’t beat how deep the Mariana Trench goes

A mountain expedition rarely succeeded against the testing situation that takes to reach the highest point on earth. Although millions of years old, Mount Everest is still relatively new compared to the mountains around the world. It is a kind of young fold mountain made due to the collision of Indian and Eurasian tectonic plates. People from across the world know about Everest and it holds deep mythological and cultural importance to the land it surrounds. However not much is known about the Mariana Trench.

A major reason being, not much of it has been discovered. The Mariana Trench forms the deepest location on the earth. Located between Hawaii and the Philippines near the little island of Guam, far below the surface of the water. What’s going on down there? We hardly know.

The Trench is 1500 miles long, with a depth of almost 7 miles, which makes it a much massive body in front of Mount Everest which is only 5.5 miles. The entire Everest could fit into The Mariana Trench and a little more.

What do we know about the Mariana Trench so far?

It sits like a crescent-shaped dip in the Pacific Ocean’s floor. The weight of all that water above causes the Trench’s pressure to be 1000 times higher than it would be in, say, Miami or New York. Some believe that it would be around 48 jumbo jets. Liquid sulfur and carbon dioxide bubbles are ejected from floor vents. It’s just above freezing outside, and everything is engulfed in darkness.

However, in some way life finds a way. Amphipods, which grow up to 30cms long. Their shell is made up of a hard exoskeleton that consists of calcium carbonate. In normal circumstances due to the pressure in the trench, they could have been dissolved but they have a shield rather than a layer made up of aluminum which they synthesize in their bodies. Amphipods share their habitat with Mariana snailfish, which have a unique set of features like flexible bones, are blind and tier skin is translucent so you can see their internal organs.

So how really deep is it?

If we were to compare, most ocean life dwells above 660 feet. As we go down nuclear submarines hover roughly at 850. Sailing further deep, whales are rarely observed below the dept of 8,200 feet. And Mount Everest with the height of around could easily sit on the Trench and still have more space left. The point that sits most distant from the water’s surface is the Challenger Deep (36,070)  which lies at the southern end of the trench. It is the deepest point of the Trench. While hundreds of mountain expeditions have successfully climbed Everest, only three people have ever dared to explore the Challenger Deep.

The first expedition took place in 1960 when amidst the cold war, Jacques Piccard and Navy Lt. Don Walsh reached the Challenger Deep in a U.S. Navy submersible. Spending only 20 minutes due to the pressure in the trench, they were unable to take any pictures as the sand deposited in the Trench went haywire. The next visitor to the trench was filmmaker, James Cameron. Taking a dive deep in the ocean, he was able to spend 3 hours but of course, faced many difficulties. His return was celebrated as he was able to take many pictures and videos.
