What to expect from the Smart home alliance between Apple, Amazon, and Google?

May 23, 2021

With the boom in smart home appliances, there has also been a rise in the demand for appliances to be secure and ensure privacy.

In 2019, the three largest firms Apple, Amazon, and Google, partnered with the Zigbee alliance and announced a brand new CHIP platform that will be accustomed to providing the utmost protection.

Amazon, Apple, Google, and the Zigbee Alliance announced a new working group that plans to develop and promote the adoption of a new, royalty-free connectivity standard to increase compatibility among smart home products, with security as a fundamental design tenet.

WHAT IS THE CHIP PROJECT?

The chip platform is a potential smart home solution with smart appliances for the house meant for all platforms. In 2019 Apple successfully confirmed security and privacy as prime components for this product, and other tech giants agreed to join them for an open standard for home security.

Apple clarified, this project supports the prevailing proprietary standards of the partnered companies and intends to leverage development work and protocols from existing systems like Alexa Smart Home, Apple’s HomeKit, Google’s Weave and Zigbee Alliance’s Dotdot data models.

First devices to be certified by the alliance are expected to hit shelves in 2021; the businesses behind “CHIP” declared that the project would have a replacement name called Matter.

WHAT CAN WE EXPECT FROM THE ALLIANCE?

For Matter to get certified, the merchandise must adopt the upper criterion, making it compatible with other existing devices like Alexa Smart Home, HomeKit, and Google’s Weave protocols. As a part of this platform, there’ll be devices like smart light bulbs, video doorbells, door locks, smart speakers, and more.

Earlier, the CEO of the Matter said that each device authorized by the new alliance would have a distinct logo which can imply that it functions with the Apple, Amazon, and Google ecosystems. He also expects that the emblem in future might evolve as ‘ubiquitous’ as the Wi-Fi logo presently is.

A DEEPER LOOK INTO THE MATTER

From the image, we understand that the Matter logo has three arrows edging toward the centre, embodying the partnership of the three companies. Customers will see this logo on the packages of products and, therefore, the devices after becoming available.

As explained, Matter is formulated to unite the network area and secure devices with any three major voice control systems.

EXPERT OPINIONS

According to Michelle Mandala-Freeman, head of promoting at Matter, consistent accessories will have setup codes to let users easily pair them on any platform and therefore, the main idea behind all this is often to interrupt the barrier between smart home devices so that the user does not have to worry about which platform the accessory is compatible with.

Kevin Po, Google’s Nest senior product manager, said that developers should be happy with the Matter. He also claims that “The smart home can’t grow if each device maker has got to formulate products that job with one another ecosystem protocol”—adding that he also stated that Google would list Matter developments at its Google I/O event, which commences May 18.

As part of Matter and Zigbee, The report says that the primary Matter-certified device should be available later this year. But still, all major points are missing, and a more detailed plan is still foggy. Eager developers can start working with protocol and check out the GitHub page of Zigbee.

Smart home devices can use any number of protocols, such as Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, Wireless USB, Z-Wave, and ZigBee.

CONCLUSION

We understood that this platform and the alliance of three giants would provide uniformity of smart home connections despite the smart devices and control assistance. On the topic of Matter, things are still unclear, and we might have to wait a little bit more.
